Bread of affliction.
Leaven is symbolic of sin in the Bible. Paul references it here:
“Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Messiah, our Passover also has been sacrificed. Let us, therefore, celebrate the feast (Passover), not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (I Corinthians 5:6-8)
Knowing that the Jewish people during Passover take great efforts to rid their homes of all leaven, how does this encourage you to remove the leaven, or sin, from your house, your life?
See how the matzah has no leaven.
See how the matzah is pierced and striped.
But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; the punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
How does this picture change the image of Jesus as the bread of life?
As you learned about the "matzah-tash" and the three compartments that hold the matzah, do you see how this ancient Jewish tradition might have more Messianic implications?
