Breaking down barriers to the gospel

For Jewish people, the Old Testament holds profound significance as “their book,” and rightly so. Yet, the traditional presentation of the gospel often overlooks the volume of Messianic prophecies embedded into its verses. As a result, many Jewish people miss the opportunity to see the Messiah through the lens of their own Scriptures.

The Jewish Road!

Understanding Sin and Separation:
Isaiah 59:1-2

Blue silicone bracelet with engraved text reading "ISA 59-2 LEV" resting on a wooden surface.

"Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear." (Isaiah 59:1-2)

This verse encapsulates a deep truth recognized in Jewish tradition: our actions create a barrier between us and the Holy One. In Jewish thought, sin isn't merely a set of wrong actions - it's a breach in our relationship with God. This passage calls us to confront our own separation from God and understand the profound need for a mediator who can reconcile us back to Him. This is the basis for the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur.

The Necessity of Atonement:
Leviticus 17:11

Blue silicone bracelet engraved with biblical references, placed on a wooden surface.

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life." (Leviticus 17:11)

Jewish tradition holds life in the highest regard, and this verse underlines that the essence of life – the blood – is key to atonement. This concept is crucial in understanding why mere human efforts at atonement fall short. The call for a blood atonement points to the need for a sacrifice beyond our own - a need perfectly met in the Messiah, who offers not just temporal, but eternal atonement.

The Promise of a Prophet Like Moses:
Deuteronomy 18:18-19

Blue silicone bracelet with Bible verse references engraved on it, placed on a wooden surface.

"I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him." (Deuteronomy 18:18-19)

In Judaism, Moses is unparalleled as a prophet, lawgiver, and leader. This prophecy anticipates another, one like Moses yet greater, who would speak God’s final word to us. From a Messianic Jewish perspective, this points unequivocally to Jesus, who, like Moses, liberates from bondage – not from Pharaoh, but from sin.

The Suffering Servant: Isaiah 53:3-6, 12

Blue silicone bracelet with engraved text resting on a wooden surface.

"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief... All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:3-6, 12)

This chapter has stirred Jewish hearts for centuries, painting a portrait of a figure who suffers not for his own faults but for others'. In Messianic Judaism, this is seen as a clear depiction of Jesus' sacrificial life and death. He embodies the ultimate Suffering Servant, bringing healing through His wounds, answering the deepest questions about human suffering and divine love.

A New Covenant:
Jeremiah 31:31-33

Blue silicone wristband with embossed text: ISA 53 JER 31:31, resting on a wooden surface.

"Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people." (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

This passage speaks of a transformative new covenant, one that fulfills and transcends the previous ones. It addresses a yearning in Jewish thought for a more intimate, unbreakable relationship with God. In the New Covenant, this longing is fulfilled through Jesus, providing not just a new understanding of the law, but an internalization of it, guiding us from within.
